Authentic Indian Cuisine near Harrow

Indian food is not one cuisine but many. The menu at Dawat Bar and Kitchen travels from Bombay street stalls to Goan fish curry and slow-sealed Awadhi biryani, all cooked at our kitchen on Streatfield Road, a short trip from Harrow.

  • Bombay Chowpatty chaat: panipuri, bhel and samosa chaat
  • Handi curries, from daal makhani to rogan josh
  • Dum biryani, sealed and slow-cooked, served with raita
  • Breads made in the tandoor

The regions behind the menu

The Bombay Chowpatty section takes its name from the beach in Mumbai famous for street food: panipuri, sev dahi puri and papadi chaat. The handi dishes are cooked in a deep pot, the way many North Indian homes do, and include murgh makhanwala, daal makhani and Mughlai kadhai gosht.

From the west coast come Goan fish curry, Malabari prawn curry and Konkan fish rava fry. The menu also reflects the East African Indian kitchen, with chilli garlic mogo (cassava) and a Kenyan-style chilli chicken.

A wide mix: Bombay street-food chaat, North Indian handi curries, Awadhi dum biryani, coastal dishes from Goa and Kerala, tandoor grills and a few Indo-Chinese favourites such as veg Manchurian and hakka noodles.

A handi is a deep cooking pot. Handi curries are slow-cooked in it, which gives a rich, thick sauce. Ours include paneer makhani, daal makhani, rogan josh and murgh makhanwala.

The pot is sealed and the rice and meat or vegetables cook slowly in their own steam. Each of our dum biryanis comes with yoghurt raita.
